I use the Akismet plugin to filter the spam, and it's great--catches 99.99% of the garbage, but you do have to scan the queue for legit comments mis-labeled as spam and mass delete the rest (every day or so). That's how I came across these gems! It also gives you the "count" which is 10,558 at this very minute! David, I use a self install of WordPress on a 3rd party host (godaddy).
